At the beginning of my fitness journey, I had the privilege to transform myself from a skinny high schooler into someone strong and active, but when I arrived to San Francisco State University, I faced a problem the gym couldn't fix.
I had just quit baseball, my identity for 12 years. Suddenly, I didn't know who I was. There was no meaning in the gym anymore and my physique was suffering, I hit a full-blown identity crisis.
That mental block backed me into a corner, and my only way out was through reading. In an act of "it's so stupid, why not give it a try?", I purchased a discounted self-help book from Target. It wasn't groundbreaking, but the simple lessons ignited a belief shift that changed my entire life. It introduced me to the concept of personal growth and gave me direction when I had none.
Through this process, I noticed a strong correlation to fitness: people often struggle not because they lack effort, but because one underlying issue holds them back. Like my own mental spiral, the same tools are used, while expecting different results. I found that by stepping back and trying something new, I finally found what worked, and I realized the same principle applies to fitness.
Now, I coach others with these principles: structure, consistency, and the creation of habits that actually serve you. Whether it's a college freshman who thinks no days off is the key to building muscle, or a lab researcher who believes skipping entire meals is the solution to weight loss, I help gym-goers break harmful patterns and rebuild them so that they work with you, not against you.
With structured programming, guidance in nutrition/recovery and an accountability partner to check in with, anyone can make lasting change. My role as an accountability trainer lies in the guidance provided to those who dream of a better life (either physically or mentally), but are just confused as to how to get there.
The lowest point in my life taught me a very powerful truth: when you accept yourself as you are, shortcomings and all, only then can you allow yourself to make change for the better. And that's the kind of progress I help others make, one improvement at a time.
